Among the biographies of the 32 students and faculty murdered at Virginia Tech, the April 30, 2007 issue of Newsweek magazine, references foreign-languages chair Richard Shryock.  If this surname is or was pronounced SHEER-EE-ACH, then it is a definite possibility to be a variant of the Cyriak or other similarly sounding spellings - a visit to the www.shryock.net web site indicates the origins may be Dutch, but that's only back to the early 1700s and doesn't eliminate us as a possiblity -- the spellings back then, though, are out of line with our phonetic pronunciation.
