CYR may or may not be connected to the
Cyriac family genealogy. It depends upon how
the name, alternatively spelled as "Sire" and
"Syre" originated. If it came from the name of a
Saint Cyr, then it could be related to
Cyriacus. At a population of 15,000 in the
1990 census, it surpasses all the others, including Ciriaco, as the predominant
form of a surname possibly connected to the original Cyriac spelling.
We have yet to delve into the controversy surrounding the histories of
the various Saints Cyr, Cyriaca and Cyriacus (and
their alternative spellings) which may or may not have become legendary coincident with the crusades of the middle
(or dark) ages.
